After finishing work on an eight page Martillo story  http://dbroughton.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/martillo-update.html pencilling and inking for the last seven pages of 'Mean Green Machine' took place between 28th September and 2nd October. After finishing the next eight page Martillo story, colouring and lettering pages 13 to 25 of Dredd 'MGM' started in November. They were completed a week before the publishing date of December 1st for the 2000ad forum advent calender.

Background information.

Before work could start on part three I had to complete six pages for a story in Zarjaz called 'What ever happened to Sancho Panzer' written by the Emperor. This was followed by a seven page story 'Martillo El Coco' http://dbroughton.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/more-martillo.html written by Greg Meldrum.  Eventually pencilling and inking for pages 13 to 18 started on 14th August and were completed nine days later.  Colouring and lettering for the pages took place in November.

Below: Once again rough thumbnails were used for page layouts.

Above: Pages 13 and 14.  Panel layouts were changed on the finished page artwork.

Background information.

After finishing the first part of 'Judge Dredd' MGM, Owen Watts editor of DR. WTF asked me to draw four full colour pages for the 'Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel.'  After the pages for Owen had been completed I started work on the next part of Dredd MGM. Pencilling and inking were started on 1st June and finished eight days later. There was a gap of several weeks before I could start colouring and lettering however by early August I had completed the first 12 pages.

Below: With less time for more lavish page layouts I resorted to quick thumbnail sketches.

Background information.

After contributing to the 2000ad forum advent calendar last year (2011) run by 2000ad fan Pete Wells.  Check out his 2000ad covers website http://2000adcovers.blogspot.co.uk/   I had the idea of drawing a daily strip for the next one.

Early in march 2012 I started work on the first six pages in my spare time. By early April all six pages had been pencilled and inked. There was a gap of 3 weeks or so before I could colour and finish lettering the artwork to make it ready for publishing on the web.

Below: Page layouts for pages 2 to 3 which were created in March 2012.

Below:  Pencils for page 2 and 3. Note the changes on panel 3 of page 2.

The next 6 pages of this story will be published on this blog soon.

FACE JUDGE DREDD.

I decided to practice drawing Dredd.  I used no reference other than previous Dredd pictures I've drawn and it took me about 5 hours to complete. I've included scans of all pencils, inks etc below.

Above: The pencils took me about 50 minutes to complete using an HB. I've drawn Judge Dredd strips for 'Zarjaz' and so I used pictures from these for reference when needed.  I normally draw the ridge along the top of the helmet behind the sheild. However it seems that most current 2000ad artists don't so I have decided to do the same.

Above: The inking took approx 45 minutes to complete using various Rotring Tikky Graphic pens.

Above: After scanning and cleaning up the inking I block coloured the image and saved the whole picture as a multi-layered PSD file. Total time 25 minutes.

Above: Using multiple layers I added the shading and backgound over the next 3 hours leaving me with the final result above.

SD WOLVES

Script: Mark J. Howard. Art: D. Broughton. Letters: Bolt 01.

Above: Johnny faces the Fear Wolf.

I had wanted to draw Johnny Alpha for a while when Dave Evans sent me a script on 8th March 2012.
I loved the story and after agreeing to take the job on I started the artwork a few days later. Not only did I get to draw Alpha but Wulf and a monster called a Fearwolf.  The rough design for the Fearwolf can be seen further on down the page.

I had been working on producing the best artwork that I could but as fast as possible.  20 days later I had finished the artwork and sent it to Dave on 31st March 2012.

THE NDOKI.

Script: Alec Robertson. Art: David Broughton. Letters: Deadbolt 01.

Above: Can Titchane and Nyoka protect their village from the evil that visits them?

On the 26th January editor Dave Evans contacted me with the script 'Ndoki' by Alec Robertson.
The macabre tale Ndoki is set in 19th century Africa and required a fair amount of reference to help me visualize the story. I Sent Dave Evans the finished art on 2nd March 2012 and the artwork was lettered and locked for print  6th June 2012.
